Kalispel Tribe offers support to crime victims in Spokane, Pend Oreille

SPOKANE, Wash. – During October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, crucial resources are accessible for those in need through the Kalispel Tribe Victim Assistance Services. These resources are available to anyone in Spokane or Pend Oreille County dealing with crimes from another person.

The Kalispel Tribe Victim Assistance Services operates a crisis hotline that ensures someone is available to answer calls at any time of the day or night. Keep in mind though that this is not an emergency line, those in urgent need should call 911 for immediate assistance. If police are on the scene when you call the hotline, an advocate can meet you to offer support. Otherwise, arrangements will be made to meet in a safe location or at their office.

Ashley Carter, a Sexual Assault Victims Advocate, emphasized the importance of addressing immediate needs. “What do they need in the moment, what can I provide… do they need water? Do they need food? To just decompress from what they’ve gone through… I’m there to provide that, to provide the resources I can assist with… my priority is to make my client feel comfortable,” she said.

Appointments with advocates can usually be scheduled the same day. Once you arrive at the secure location, you will fill out some forms before meeting with a trained advocate. These advocates are equipped to assess your needs and connect you with necessary resources. They are trained in listening, assembling support groups, problem solving, and building independence. They can also assist in finding legal counsel and work directly with law enforcement if needed.

Ashley Carter stated, “I’m going to treat anyone who comes through our doors with the most respect and comfort… I want them to feel comfortable when they come through our doors… letting them know that they are our priority.”

No matter the situation, help is available for those in need.
