KELLOGG, Idaho – The Kellogg School District is considering reducing the number of days students attend classes to just four per-week.
According to a May newsletter sent to parents the change is under consideration but no definitive decisions have been made.
“Although still in the preliminary stages of research and planning, the district recently shared initial insights and considerations with the Board of Trustees during a public workshop held on April 25th,” the district said.
It is not clear whether funding issues could be a factor in reducing the number of days students learn each year in Kellogg. The district mentioned that the change could reduce chronic absenteeism, but could also pose a challenge for working parents.
“The district recognizes the need for robust community engagement and input to ensure that any proposed changes align with the diverse needs and preferences of students, families, and staff members,” the district said.
Over 2,000 schools have transitioned to a four-day school week as of 2023 according to an Oregon State University study.
