MOSCOW, Idaho — After 20 months in Latah County Jail, Bryan Kohberger has been moved.
Kohberger, a suspect in the University of Idaho murders, was transferred to Ada County early this morning.
He was flown by Idaho State Police from the Pullman-Moscow Airport around 6:25 a.m. and landed at the Boise Airport at approximately 8:21 a.m.
This change in venue has sparked reactions among Moscow locals and students at the University of Idaho. Are sympathizing with the victims’ families who now face the added stress and expense of traveling 300 miles south to Boise for the trial.
“I feel like it’s so much more stress to have to worry about trying to travel down to where the trial is so that you can speak your mind and so your points and your feelings can be known,” one student said.
The decision to fly Kohberger was made to avoid complications that could arise from driving the distance, according to Captain Ryan Jensen of the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.
The relocation has prompted concerns about the financial impact on the community.
One local expressed frustration over the costs involved, stating, “It’s been kind of a ridiculous amount of money going into this case which personally in my opinion I think it should’ve been done way sooner than now.”
Despite the logistical challenges, students remain confident that the support and compassion for the victims’ families will extend beyond Moscow.
“There’s still gonna be people down there who care about the vandals and care about Moscow and care about the people there,” a student emphasized.
The trial is scheduled to start on June 2, 2024, more than two and a half years after the murders.
It is still unclear if the recent change in location will delay proceedings further.
