Kootenai County passes new ordinance for dividing land to family

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – A new ordinance will make gifting or selling land to family members in Kootenai County a smoother and cheaper process now.

The Family Division ordinance will aid property owners having a division of unplotted land for the purpose of a single gift or sale to the landowner’s spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent or grandchild.

Not all land is eligible for the Family Division process, but eligible land could help save property owners thousands.

“It’s a much easier way to divide land than the usual minor or major subdivision process,” David Callahan the Community Development Director of Kootenai County said. “Property owners can save thousands just by eliminating the requirement to hire a professional surveyor.”

Restrictions and regulations to land can still be applied even through the new ordinance. All federal, state and local requirements must be followed.
