LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Times published an Aug. 13 investigative report showing that hackers may have been able to access the social security numbers of every American citizen.
According to the investigation, a hacker from the group USDoD managed to access 2.7 billion sensitive records including the full names, addresses and social security numbers of American citizens.
While other media outlets including The New York Times and Washington Post have covered the breach, neither have been able to independently verify whether the reported breach has actually taken place.
The Social Security Administration suggests avoiding identity theft by never writing your SSN in a digital forum which other people could access, never carrying your SSN on your person and never sending it over email.
