COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — A man has been sentenced to federal prison for domestic assault as a habitual offender.
Court records reveal that in June 2023, Gordon Bennett Jr., 46, committed a domestic assault against his wife. The investigation uncovered that Bennett had at least two prior convictions for domestic violence in Nez Perce Tribal Court. Under federal law, it is a felony to commit domestic assault on a reservation if the defendant has at least two prior domestic assault convictions.
The maximum penalty for this offense is up to five years in federal prison. Chief U.S. District Court Judge David C. Nye also sentenced Bennett to three years of supervised release following his prison term. During this period, Bennett must adhere to the terms of his supervised release, which include counseling, treatment, and regular meetings with his federal probation officer.
“I am grateful for the collaboration that enables the Tribe and our office to combat domestic violence,” said U.S. Attorney Hurwit. “We must all work to prevent the severe trauma inflicted on victims and survivors by repeated abuse.”
