OLYMPIA, Wash. – April 22 is the start of Lesbian Visibility Week (LVW). This year the theme of the week is “United, Not Uniform.

The purpose of the awareness event is explained on the organization’s website.

“Our aim is to celebrate lesbians and show solidarity with all LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people in our community. We believe in unity and lifting up those who are most marginalized,” LVW said.

Lesbian Visibility Week was observed by the White House in 2022 and 2023.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre highlighted her own experience during a 2023 press conference celebrating the week.

“As the first openly queer person to hold the position of Press Secretary for the President of the United States, I see every day how important visibility and representation are,” Jean-Pierre said.

This year, Lesbian Visibility Week is sponsored by the National Center for Lesbian Rights, GLAAD and several local pride organizations. There do not appear to be any major sponsors from Washington State.
