Liberty Lake residents asked to take safety precautions as theft crime rates rise

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — Liberty Lake residents have reported thefts at their homes and other personal property.

According to the Liberty Lake Police Department, people have reported crimes of general theft, burglaries and vehicle prowls to their personal property. The department said they are actively investigating these crimes.

“In effort to provide transparency without tarnishing the integrity of our active investigations, we wanted to provide some information on how to reduce the likelihood of victimization of these crimes,” said Liberty Lake Police Department in a public notice.

Police suggested creating a routine to ensure home, vehicle and personal belongings are secure, and nothing is in view that would be enticing for criminals to want to break in. This routine is sometimes referred to as the 9 p.m. Routine, and this could include removing all valuable items from your car or closing your curtains. Police also say to pick up all items in your yard.

Another suggestion the police department is asking residents to do is to lock their cars if it is in a driveway, parking stall or curbside. It is essential that you remove all personal identification and firearms from your vehicle. It is also important not to leave garage door openers unattended, and Liberty Lake Police suggest attaching them to a key chain.

To lower the probability of packages being stolen off your porch, many companies offer delayed deliveries, which can be timed until you are home, so no package is left unattended for very long. Installing motion-activated lights and cameras is becoming more popular, making it easy to see who is at your house when you are not there.

Anyone with questions on these safety measures can contact the Liberty Lake Police Department for further information.
