Mailboxes reportedly vandalized near Cheney

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) confirmed multiple mailboxes were reportedly vandalized over the weekend near Cheney.

Jenny Adsitt noticed her mailbox was smashed on Saturday morning.

Initially, she suspected it must’ve been an accident.

“It was the first morning we had a lot of ice on the road. And it really looked like a car or truck had hit it, because it just totally wiped it out,” Adsitt said.

However, they talked to others in the area and saw on social media that other mailboxes were vandalized.

“And so, we just had this sickening feeling that, ‘Oh my gosh. This was intentional’,” Adsitt said.

SCSO confirmed at least three reports, including Adsitt’s, of vandalized mailboxes. In the reports, there were descriptions of other vandalized boxes throughout the area.

SCSO told NonStop Local that, based on the reports, it appears to be malicious mischief, but they are still investigating at this time.

The office added that vandalism like this does happen throughout Spokane County every so often.

According to the United States Postal Inspection Service, all mailboxes are protected by federal law.

Those convicted of destroying federal property could spend up to three years in jail and be fined up to $250,000.
