Man arrested after smoking fentanyl, crashing into mailboxes at Super 1 in Rathdrum

RATHDRUM, Idaho — A man was arrested after he admitted to smoking fentanyl before he dove into a bank of mailboxes at Super 1 Foods in Rathdrum.

According to the Rathdrum Police Department (RPD), officers responded to the 5800 block of North Westwood Drive for the report of a crash. Upon arrival, officers noticed a car hit a bank of mailboxes just outside the store.

RPD said the parking lot was full, and multiple people were trying to assist the driver.

Officers observed a piece of burnt aluminum foil with a partially melted blue pill on the driver’s floorboard. An investigation was conducted, and the driver, Gregory Herbert, was arrested.

RPD confirmed Herbert admitted to smoking fentanyl before he crashed. He was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use.
