COEUR D ALENE, Idaho — A man arrested in Coeur D’ Alene in 2008 was identified as a serial killer from four unsolved murders in Calgary dating back to the 1970s.
Gary Allen Srery was arrested in Coeur d Alene in 2008 for rape. He was serving a life sentence when he died of natural causes in 2011.
From 1976 to 1977, four women were murdered near Calgary. Patsy McQueen, 14, Eva Dvorak, 14, Melissa Rehorek, 20 and Barbara MacLean, 19.
Evidence was gathered at each scene, but a suspect was never identified due to a lack of technology.
In 2003, police confirmed the suspect in the murder of Rehorek and MacLean were linked but could not identify anyone.
From 2021-2022, evidence was resubmitted in the Dvorak and McQueen murders and also matched, confirming the same suspect in all four murders.
In 2021, the Alberta RCMP partnered with the Calgary Police Service to use investigative genetic genealogy. Two years later, in 2023, Srery’s name was identified as a match.
According to the Alberta RCMP, Srery was a US citizen illegally living in Canada.
To put together a timeline, the Alberta RCMP is searching for anyone who lived in the Calgary area from 1774 to 1978 or recognized Srery through his attempts to change his appearance. Contact the Alberta RCMP Historical Homicide Unit at 780-509-3306 or K-IDEOLOGY@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
