RITZVILLE, Wash. – Adams County deputies located and arrested a man who was accused of attacking a woman and a Ritzville police officer with a knife before fleeing.

The incident began when an officer from the Ritzville Police Department responded to a domestic dispute near 2nd and Lewis Street. A man reportedly hit a woman, prompting the police response, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

During the investigation, Brian Sumner, 45, allegedly interfered with the officer’s efforts to speak with the female victim. Police say Sumner pulled a knife and tried to stab both the officer and the woman, attempting to place the knife in her chest. A nearby citizen intervened, helping to move the woman away from Sumner’s reach.

Authorities stated that Sumner fled on foot, with police attempting to taser him without success. Sumner then got into his car and drove away at high speed. Attempts to catch him were unsuccessful due to his dangerous driving.

Law enforcement confirmed there were no injuries.

There is probable cause to arrest Sumner on charges of three counts of first-degree assault, one count of third-degree assault, obstructing a public servant, resisting arrest and felony eluding.

Police located and arrested him in Spokane on Tuesday and he will held in Franklin County Jail for the mentioned charges.
