SPOKANE, Wash. — One man is dead after a fatal auto-pedestrian crash on south Glenrose Road Saturday night.

On Dec. 2 around 8:55 a.m., Spokane County deputies responded to a report of an unknown injury crash blocking south Glenrose Road, which is south of Carnahan Road.

Additional callers told dispatchers that they saw a man lying in the roadway.

As fire and AMR personnel arrived on scene they immediately provided medical aid to the man. Crews also observed a Dodge Durango that was slightly over an embankment, partially perpendicular to a Dodge Caravan.

Based on witness statements and initial investigation, the driver of the Caravan was blocking the road due to mechanical issues. He was not able to use his hazard lights at the time.

One witness pulled over when they noticed the Durango traveling north towards the Caravan. The witness flashed their lights to alert the driver that the Caravan was parked on the road. As the Durango began to break it began to slide east on the roadway. It went off the road towards a ditch and hit the driver of the Caravan, who was standing at the rear driver’s side.

The man that was hit was transported to the hospital but later succumbed to their life-threatening injuries.

A second witness of the crash said that they approached the driver of the Caravan and asked if he needed help. The man said that he needed gas and advised him to sit in the van due to slick roads.

The driver of the Durango told police that he saw headlights flashing ahead of him. He put pressure on his brakes but slid on a patch of ice. He unsuccessfully swerved toward the east to try and avoid hitting the van but continued sliding. The car went off the road, into a ditch and spun.

At the time of the crash, the driver was unaware that there was a man outside of the Caravan. He was wearing all dark clothing and standing behind his vehicle.

Spokane County Sheriff’s Traffic Unit Technicians responded to the scene due to the severity of the incident. The driver of the Durango was cooperative with law enforcement during their investigation.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be involved in this fatal crash.

This is an ongoing investigation. Information will be updated as we learn more.
