SPOKANE, Wash. – A man is in critical condition after early Thursday morning.
The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) arrived at the scene around 6 a.m. in response to a call from a witness who had reportedly seen the truck floating downstream.
According to the SFD, the truck drifted roughly 1000 feet before stopping about six feet underwater near the 4400 block of East Upriver Drive.
Patrol officers reported spotting a victim in the river, drifting downstream from the truck’s location.
The SFD later discovered that the victim was trapped beneath the water’s surface near the Green Street bridge, just downstream from the truck.
SFD’s water rescue team pulled the victim from the water at 6:30 a.m. after reaching him via kayaks and a rescue boat. The man was transferred to the shore for medical treatment and shortly after was taken to the hospital by AMR in critical condition.
The incident was classified as a crash by the Spokane Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit. The Spokane Valley Fire Department and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office also assisted during the rescue.
