SPOKANE, Wash. — One person was transported to the hospital after a fire near the Spokane Airport on Tuesday.

The Spokane Fire Department said the fire started around 6:32 p.m. on the bottom floor of an apartment complex near the 7700 block of @ US 2. SFD said the wife was cooking and left the room when she smelled smoke.

Crews arrived at the scene and observed heavy smoke. A man was trapped inside the apartment and was found unconscious. He was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and is in critical condition, according to SFD.

SFD said crews had trouble getting inside the apartment due to clutter but were able to access the flames and put the fire out.

Those living in the unit will be displaced, but all other apartments will be okay.

This remains under investigation.
