Man rescued from Snake River after crashing car through campground

ASOTIN, Wash. – A man was found floating and calling out for help in the Snake River after driving his car through a campground and crashing.

The Asotin County Fire District and Lewiston Fire responded to the crash around 1:45 a.m. on Monday morning.

Witnesses at Chief Timothy Campground reported that the car had been speeding through the campground area before crashing into the water.

When police arrived, they heard shouts in the water and located a possibly intoxicated driver.

Police noticed the driver had escaped the car and swam to the Highway 12 side of the river but would not get out.

Bystanders in a boat threw the man a flotation device before police could rescue him.

Rescue crew members were able to pull him from the water and transport him to the hospital.

No other injuries were reported in the crash.
