SPOKANE, Wash. — A man was violently assaulted before his car was stolen near the Spokane International Airport.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), the assault happened near West 50th Avenue and South Grove Road. The victim flagged down a deputy and told him his car was stolen. SCSO said information was limited as the victim spoke limited English.

The victim told deputies that he stopped at a gas station near South Hayford Road and US 2 when he was approached by a man asking for a ride. The victim agreed and drove the suspect to the 6000 block of West 50th Avenue, where the suspect asked the victim to get out of the car. The victim agreed, and the suspect pulled out a gun and, according to SCSO, started to attack the victim violently.

Another car arrived, and the driver got out and joined the assault. SCSO said the victim sustained a smashed or cut-off finger when he tried to stop his car from being stolen.

A search was unsuccessful for the victim’s stolen green 1999 Ford Mustang and the suspect’s possible white Subaru.

This remains an active investigation.
