MEAD, Wash. — The Mead School District will hire attorneys from Seattle to conduct an audit of the school’s football program following reports of racial misconduct allegations.
At a special board meeting, the school district confirmed it would move forward with an audit of both the football team and the district’s athletic program. The board discussed which policies within the district may have been violated and whether any updates to those policies are needed. The primary focus will be on the football team, and after receiving the initial report, the board will decide whether to expand the investigation if warranted.
The board said that a broader investigation would incur higher costs but settled on focusing the initial audit on the Mead High School football program. They also emphasized the importance of regular updates on both the progress and costs of the investigation.
The allegations stem from reports of student-to-student misconduct at the district’s summer football camp at Eastern Washington University in June 2023. The district said a series of emails from concerned parents and subsequent meetings revealed that former football coach Keith Stamps, who was fired last month, was made aware of the allegations but did not fully investigate or report them to district officials in a timely manner. The misconduct includes claims of sexual harassment and abuse among students.
