MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. – Mayor Terri Cooper of the City of Medical Lake announced the suspension of fireworks in the Medical Lake area.
The Mayor and the city council issued the order on June 4, believing that suspending the sale and use of fireworks is necessary to protect public health and safety. Mayor Cooper determined that exigent and immediate steps are required to mitigate potential fire danger and ensure recovery efforts for citizens and community members impacted by the 2023 Gray Road Fire are not impeded.
The Order temporarily suspends the sale, use and discharge of fireworks in Medical Lake. City officials recognize that the suspension may affect residents celebrating Independence Day but hope this announcement will allow residents to make other plans during the holiday.
The city is still planning a controlled fireworks display for the Fourth of July with a licensed person in charge of the show.
“Balancing the community’s desire to celebrate Independence Day with the customary use of fireworks and the shock and trauma experienced by many citizens due to the Gray Road Fire, including at the current time, is understandably difficult. However, the City and City Council hope that all citizens and community members understand the challenging circumstances and need for this Order,” Mayor Cooper said.
