Moses Lake, Wash. – A Friday night shooting that left two children shot at the Grant County Fairgrounds was sparked when a 15-year-old from Wenatchee encountered a member of a rival gang according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office says that the shooting was the result of a fight that started as a screaming match between the 15-year-old, who was with his 16-year-old girlfriend, and a member of another gang.
“While attempting to draw a handgun, the suspect fired one round. That round passed through his girlfriend’s back and then struck the 14-year-old girl in the leg,” the sheriff’s office said.
Sheriff’s deputies who were already at the fair ran after the 15-year-old and tackled him after members of the fair crowd shoved the teenager into a carnival ride railing. A gun was allegedly found on the teenage suspect.
“Investigators are recommending charges of two counts of first-degree assault with a firearm or deadly weapon, second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, and reckless endangerment,” the sheriff’s office said.
Both girls were transported to the hospital and are in stable condition according to the sheriff’s office.
