SPOKANE, Wash. – The death of Katelynn Poe, a mother of six, is under investigation following her severe injuries sustained in September.
Renee Poe, Katelynn’s mother, received devastating news on Sept. 22, when she was informed that Katelynn had severe bleeding in her brain and that her daughter was at Providence Sacred Heart.
“[I was told] she had fallen down some stairs and was on the way to the hospital. So then, I called the hospital, and they told me I should probably, very carefully get in my car and head to Spokane. My daughter had a major brain bleed. She was covered head-to-toe, and when I say ‘head-to-toe,’ I mean head-to-toe black and blue,” Poe said.
Katelynn was hospitalized for a month. Her injuries were severe, leading to a difficult decision for Poe.
“They told me that I had to either decide to put a drain in her head right now or to let her pass,” Poe said. “I had to make the decision to either let her go home with God or keep her in a nursing home on a ventilator in a feeding tube for the rest of her life,” Poe said.
Katelynn passed away on Oct. 22, and her organs were donated. Katelynn received an honor walk at Providence Sacred Heart.
The investigation into her death continues, as Poe questions the circumstances that led to her injuries.
“The story is inconsistent with the bruising and the nature of everything that happened to my daughter, while she was in the hospital, also. So, I’m at a loss. I want to know what happened to my baby,” Poe said.
Katelynn’s service is planned for Nov. 22, two months after her injury and one month after her passing.
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving details about the incident a day or two after Katelynn was admitted to the hospital, which marked the beginning of their investigation.
