SPOKANE, Wash. — A multiple-time convicted felon is back in jail after a shooting killed a 16-year-old in Spokane Valley in March.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) confirmed Brendon M. McCullough, 29, was in the 4000 block of South Bowdish Road to commit a drug robbery on March 8. SCSO said McCullough, a multi-time convicted felon, went into the apartment with a woman while the 16-year-old and a man stayed in the car.

SCSO said once McCullough was inside the apartment, he pulled out a gun and got into a fight where shots were fired.

The 16-year-old, identified as Nathaniel Byers, was listening to an open phone call and ran into the apartment armed with a pistol. The unnamed man and woman fled the scene.

Another man in the apartment came from a back room holding a gun. When Byers got to the front door, gunfire was exchanged. The man was shot in the hand, while Byers sustained a deadly gunshot wound.

McCullough, still fighting over the gun, quickly fled the scene and drove to a gas station. Law enforcement responded to the apartment complex and gas station to secure the scene.

First responders attempted life-saving treatment to Byers, who died as a result of his injuries.

Around 12:35 a.m., the Washington State Patrol observed the suspect’s car driving north on Highway 27 at speeds over 100 mph. The SUV quickly crashed near East 16th Avenue and Highway 27. McCullough was taken into custody and was provided treatment for his gunshot wounds.

After obtaining necessary search warrants, detectives located large amounts of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia. This included scales, packaging, multiple firearms, large amounts of cash, two safes, numerous cell phones, Narcan and more. Around is a multiple-time convicted felon

Major Crimes Detectives developed probable cause to charge McCullough with criminal conspiracy, first-degree attempted robbery, first-degree assault, second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

This continues to be an open and active investigation, and additional charges and arrests are possible.
