National nonprofit visits Spokane to help support fire victims

SPOKANE, Wash. – It’s been almost a year since the Gray and Oregon Road fires started causing devastation in the Inland Northwest. Now a national nonprofit is preparing to fly and drive to Spokane County this weekend from all across the country to help our community rebuild.

This weekend around 20 women with Sister Corps will be entirely remodeling a double-y trailer that they got from the Spokane Region Long Term Recovery Group to give it to a couple who lost their home in the Oregon Road fire.

Starting Monday, volunteers will be repairing the ceiling, painting the walls, redoing the floors, and doing whatever they can to make this trailer as perfect a home as possible for this couple.

“It is very important that we make it better than ever,” said Tammy Fuller with Sister Corps. “Now it’s been a year and we’re just now getting them set up in a new place, it must be better than ever…”

While they are in town, Sister Corps will also be building 10 pump houses to replace some there were lost in the fires, and they are not doing this by themselves.

New Hope has helped organize and have offered support in several different ways.

Colbert Presbyterian church is opening their facilities to volunteers.

Garco Construction is providing equipment. They are bringing a construction trailer with tools.

Mandere Construction is building the trusses for 10 different pump houses.

Miramac Metals will provide ethe roofing.

Rodda Paint will provide the paint.

Albeni Falls and Ziggy’s will provide the lumber.

“It is absolutely a team effort,” said Fuller. “We would not be able to accomplish this in such a short time had we not had these kind of people supporting us…”
