SPOKANE, Wash. – National School Bus Safety Week takes place from Oct. 21 to 25, and is highlighting the importance of remaining vigilant around school vehicles.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office reminded the public of the importance of following traffic laws protecting school bus drivers and their passengers via social media.

“Remember to never pass a school bus when their stop paddle is out and the red lights are flashing. With kids crossing the road, passing the school bus can have terrible results. We all want children to get to and from school safely,” the office said.

The Coeur d’Alene School District highlighted the week by celebrating student Jami Bott, the 2024 Idaho School Safety Poster Contest winner.

School transportation related crashes caused an average of 108 deaths per year from 2013 to 2022 according to the US Department of Transportation, illustrating the importance of school bus safety for families and drivers.
