New Airway Heights infrastructure projects accommodate population growth

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash— Airway Heights is improving infrastructure as population growth takes it from being a small town to a growing city.

Albert Tripp, the City Manager of Airways Heights, said that in 2023, the city’s population increased by 7%. Several infrastructure projects costing roughly $30 million have been implemented to accommodate the city’s rapid growth.

The cost breakdown for these projects is $15 million for transportation projects, $5.3 million for sewer infrastructure, $3.5 million for reclaimed water extension and reservoir projects, and $4 million for a childcare facility.

Most of the projects are set to be completed in 2025 according to the city.

While these city expansions come with a substantial price tag, Tripp reassured residents that for every 35 cents from taxpayers, they are able to secure 75 cents through other means, demonstrating the city’s prudent financial management.

“The vast majority of them are actually funded through grants or very low-interest loans because we’re taking a minimal local investment and leveraging that in order to bring these dollars to the community, thus allowing the community to avoid the cost of the fault for construction,” said Tripp.

Tripp emphasized that these projects were just some on his desk. The city is actively involving the community in the decision-making process, allocating funds to public safety to ensure quicker response times.

In August, they will ask voters for their support of a public safety levy, underlining the importance of every resident’s voice in shaping our city’s future.
