New app created by WSU researchers assists ranchers

PULLMAN, Wash. – An app created by web developers from Washington State University and the University of Arizona helps ranchers manage their land effectively.

The StockSmart app allows land managers to calculate how many animals can sustainably graze in a given area. It offers ranchers throughout the western US the opportunity to efficiently calculate the amount of space they will need for each season, and helps them avoid overgrazing.

WSU Rangeland and Livestock Extension Specialist Tipton Hudson is excited about how the project will empower local ranchers.

“StockSmart allows managers to better understand how much of their forage is actually usable and accessible by their animals,” Hudson said.

Virtual workshops to help land managers determine how much forage their land yields annually will be hosted throughout November.

Registration for the workshops can be found on WSU’s website.
