New Sunflare apple from WSU to hit stores in 2029

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University has announced the official brand name of its newest apple variety, previously known as Washington 64. The apple is now called Sunflare.

The name Sunflare was chosen from a public contest that attracted over 15,000 responses. This new variety is a cross between Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apples.

It marks the third apple to emerge from WSU’s Breeding Program, following the release of the Cosmic Crisp in 2019.

Despite the excitement surrounding the new apple, consumers will have to wait until 2029 to see Sunflare in grocery stores. The process of growing the trees and producing the apples takes several years.

For those eager to try Sunflare, patience is key as the apple trees mature and the fruit becomes available in the coming years.
