OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new law empowering prosecutors to pursue stricter fines on illegal trash dumping will go into effect across Washington Thursday.

While dumping trash on public property was already illegal, the new policy will allow prosecutors to seek up to $1,000 in fines against those who improperly dispose of trash.

According to the Washington Department of Ecology, illegal dumping poses a serious threat to groundwater and animals.
