New Washington laws include wage hike and animal-tested cosmetics ban

WASHINGTON– Washington residents should be aware of several new state laws taking effect this year. These laws cover a range of topics, from employee protections to driving penalties and cosmetics regulations.

According to Washington State Legislature, as of January 1, 2025, a new minimum wage rate of $16.66 per hour is in place, up from $16.28. Cities in Washington have the option to set higher minimum wages.

Changes to sick leave regulations now allow employees to use paid sick leave for the care of their child’s spouse, anyone living with them whom they are expected to care for, and during school closures due to government emergency declarations.

A significant new law addresses reckless driving. The new charge, first-degree reckless driving with a vulnerable user victim, applies to reckless driving that endangers and kills a person or bicyclist. Penalties for this charge include up to 364 days in jail, a fine between $1,000 and $5,000, or a 90-day license suspension.

Additionally, a ban on the sale of animal-tested cosmetics is now in effect. Exceptions include cosmetics tested in other countries in compliance with their regulations, and products with ingredients tested on animals for non-cosmetic purposes.

Finally, a law establishing a statewide hotline for reporting hate crimes and bias incidents is now effective. However, the hotline will not be operational immediately. The Attorney General’s office is tasked with starting a pilot program in three counties by July 1, 2025, with a statewide launch by January 1, 2027.

These new laws reflect ongoing changes and efforts to enhance safety, fairness, and ethical standards in Washington.
