New Washington license plate law starting in 2025

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane residents should be aware of a new law set to take effect in 2025 regarding license plate covers. The Spokane Police Department is alerting drivers about these upcoming restrictions.

Starting January 1, officers will be able to issue citations instead of warnings for illegal license plate covers. This means plates must remain clean, uncovered, and clearly visible at all times.

The law makes it unlawful to use holders, frames, covers, or other materials that could change, hide, or alter the license plate. However, there is an exception for temporary cargo that might block the plate’s view.

Violating this new law could result in a $237 ticket. The Spokane Police Department also reminds everyone to ensure that vehicle plates, windows, and lights are not obstructed by frost or snow.
