OLYMPIA, Wash. – Governor Jay Inslee (D) announced the appointment of Washington’s new adjutant general on Friday.

Brigadier General Gent Welsh Jr. will serve as the commander of the state Army and Air National Guard and direct the Washington Military Department in his appointed role as Adjutant General.

Inslee pointed to Welsh’s 36 years of service experience and background leading disaster response efforts as his reasons for selecting him for the position.

“For the last four years he served as the department’s deputy director and commander of the Washington Air National Guard, leading 2,000 airmen who respond to natural disasters and work on some of the nation’s most sensitive intelligence, cyberspace and special warfare missions,” Inslee said.

Welsh served in the Air Force from 1988 to 1992 when he transferred to the Air National Guard. He has been the Assistant Adjutant General since 2020.
