ATHOL, Idaho — Selkirk Fire and other North Idaho fire crews responded to a shop fire in Athol on New Year’s Eve that threatened nearby structures.

According to Selkirk Fire and Rescue EMS, firefighters from Selkirk, Timberlake, and Northside Fire were dispatched to the scene around 10 p.m.

When crews arrived, the shop building was fully engulfed in flames, posing a threat to nearby structures. Firefighters reported that a heavy fuel load in the shop made extinguishing the fire more challenging.

Crews were able to contain the fire within about an hour, limiting the damage to the shop. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials believe a charging battery may have exploded, sparking the blaze.
