SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office announced that it will not file charges against an officer who shot and killed a suspect in December 2023.
was shot by Officer Karl Richardson at the Colton Street Walmart in Spokane after Jones-Hilburg allegedly attempted to disable security cameras and steal items.
County Prosecutor Larry Haskell will not file charges against Richardson, arguing that the Dec. 3 shooting constituted a justified deadly use of force.
Jones-Hilburg purportedly reached for a gun holstered on his shoulder when approached by Richardson, and Richardson fired a shot before cuffing him.
“Once Jones-Hilburg was safely handcuffed, the officers began emergency aid until medics arrived. Jones-Hilburg was declared deceased at the scene by medics,” Haskell’s office said.
The prosecutor’s office also said that Jones-Hillburg had meth in his system at the time of the shooting.
