COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The Idaho Panhandle Forests have received a combined $4.8 million in funding from the federal government to mitigate the threat of wildfires.

According to the US Forest Service, the funding is one of ten projects selected by the US Department of Agriculture’s Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership program.

“This project approaches wildfire threat from the landscape perspective, regardless of who owns or manages the land,” Jeff Lau, a partnership coordinator with the US Forest Service and Idaho Department of Lands said.

829,453 acres of state, federal and private forest lands in Kootenai, Bonner and Boundary counties will be covered by the new hazardous fuels reduction project.

The announcement comes after the Forest Service granted the Idaho Panhandle Forests $1 million in June for wildfire reduction efforts.
