HAYDEN, Idaho – The Northern Lakes Fire & Rescue presented the first-ever Commendation for Heroism and Valor award to Fisher DePriest for his actions in rescuing a mother and son from their car after they .

DePriest was fishing on Hayden Lake when he saw the car crash near the water. He took his boat over, and used his filet knife to cut through the sunroof and get the two out of the car and into his boat.

Captain Matt Legg was with the first engine on scene that day and said the efforts of Fisher truly made a difference.

“It was a lot of help, it made our life a lot easier. On scene, we were able to take them on a boat instead of having to haul them 200 feet up the hillside,” Captain Legg said.

Many from the DePriest family were present to watch him accept the reward, and his mother, Merrissa, said seeing her son be recognized for this outstanding effort meant the world.

“It brought tears to my eyes, and it was just really special for him and our family,” Merrissa DePriest said.

His actions also brought a standing ovation from those in the room, including many from the department who personally thanked him for his work that day. They were able to divert additional units who were called to the scene to respond to other calls in the area based on the information DePriest gave to the dispatcher.

Captain Legg came to show his gratitude, and said it was extra special to give this first-of-its-kind award to a very exceptional individual.

“I think it’s pretty cool for a 14-year-old too, you know for him to put himself in that position, and be mature enough to give updates, and actually go up to the scene, I mean the car wasn’t stable, he definitely put himself in harm’s way,” Captain Legg said.
