SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane County is set to see the transport of nuclear waste from the Hanford site as part of a new initiative. The Washington Department of Ecology has confirmed the move despite opposition from Spokane city officials.

The project will test the shipment of radioactive material in liquid form. The plan is to move 2,000 pounds of liquid nuclear waste along interstate highways, including I-90, passing through Spokane.

The transportation is part of a test bed initiative by the Department of Energy. This initiative aims to test the viability of transporting low-level radioactive liquid waste to treatment facilities in Idaho and Utah.

last month about the waste moving through densely populated communities. Mayor Lisa Brown also voiced worries that successful transportation might lead to future similar shipments from Hanford, resulting in repeated trips through Spokane.

Although the Department of Ecology stated that after next year’s transport, future movements may not necessarily follow the same plan, concerns remain among local leaders.
