Oklahoma’s Board of Education is considering a rule that would require parents enrolling children in public schools to provide proof of their child’s U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status. The rule aimed at helping President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown is set to be considered Tuesday. It would then need to be approved by the Legislature and governor. The rule is being pushed by Republican State Superintendent Ryan Walters, who said last week he would allow federal agents with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement into Oklahoma schools. Advocates for Oklahoma’s immigrant communities say Walters’ comments are causing fear among residents.
