Otis Orchards shooting marks 8th law enforcement shooting in Spokane County of 2024

OTIS ORCHARDS, Wash. – New details have emerged about a police shooting that .

According to the first Spokane Independent Investigative Response (SIIR) team update, the officer was responding to reports of a hit-and-run and road rage incident when they confronted the suspect, who was reportedly trying to break into another car. An altercation ensued, leading to the officer shooting the suspect.

The suspect is currently in the hospital and is expected to recover.

This incident marks the eighth police shooting in Spokane County this year, with six of those being fatal. The year began with a deadly two-month period from Jan. 30 to March 31, during which six people were shot and killed by law enforcement.

Among the ongoing investigations is the fatal shooting of 55. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reported that Rogissart was uncooperative when contacted before the incident. When deputies attempted to arrest him the following day, he allegedly attacked them with an axe, prompting four officers to shoot him.

Another case under investigation is the Feb. 12 shooting of by Spokane police. Cid was shot and killed after allegedly shooting a woman while on the phone with 911. This incident was the first of two Spokane police shooting deaths that day.

Former Interim Chief Justin Lundgren commented on the rise in violence, saying, “The amount of guns that officers are encountering, the level of violence is higher than it’s been in my career.” Lundgren now works with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office after Kevin Hall was appointed Chief in late August.

The Liberty Lake shooting on Saturday and an April incident at Shadle Park High School are the two non-fatal shootings this year, both still under investigation.

The Spokesman-Review’s data shows that 2024 is tied with the deadliest years in recent memory for Spokane County law enforcement, with six fatalities in 2022, 2020 and 2017.
