Parent outraged after second grader allegedly brings knife to Liberty Lake school

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash – Parents at Liberty Creek Elementary School are voicing concerns about what they call a lack of transparency by the school and the Central Valley School District (CSVD) after they say a child brought a knife to school.

LoriAnne Hudson told NonStop Local that her son, Avery, a second grader at Liberty Creek Elementary was threatened with a knife on April 10 while he was standing with two other students on the playground before the school day began.

Hudson claimed this is not the first time Avery has been targeted by this student.

“I’m just going by the description [my son gave me]… he said it was a pocket knife….but it was a button that you push and the blade flips out,” Hudson said.

Hudson said her son and the two other boys with him immediately reported the threat to a faculty member.

She said the student with the knife was placed on a 10-day emergency expulsion.

CVSD confirmed with NonStop Local that an incident did occur and that administration immediately took precautions.

Hudson said the school contacted her right after the incident.

However, she also claimed that other parents of the two children involved told her they were not notified until the end of that school day at 2:30 p.m.

Hudson also alleged that the Liberty Lake Police Department were not notified until after noon, which was hours after the incident.

Liberty Lake Police did confirm that they conducted a courtesy investigation for the school, but could not confirm with NonStop Local what time the school called them.

Hudson said her biggest frustration as of Tuesday is that the school nor CVSD are returning her or her husband’s messages. And, that no other parents at Liberty Creek were notified about the alleged incident.

CVSD told NonStop Local that they contacted any parent of a child that was “directly involved” in the incident that same morning.

Hudson took to social media where she posted in a Liberty Lake community Facebook group about the incident to try to alert parents to the situation.

“I felt like I needed to make a post, because I knew that the school hadn’t communicated to other students. It’s safety. Knowing that there’s a possibility of this kid [child who allegedly brought a knife to school] coming back,” Hudson said.

CVSD did confirm that an investigation is underway and that there is no threat to the school.
