According to a spokesperson from the Spokane Fire Department (SFD), the fire, which started around 3 p.m., occurred in the annex of a smaller building on the east side of the apartments. The fire then spread to the fourth floor, though firefighters said it was small. However, the smoke forced residents to shelter in place.
Firefighters also noted that the building’s sprinklers activated, causing water damage. While a number of people will be displaced due to the damage, authorities are still determining the exact number. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and firefighters credited the sprinklers with preventing the fire from spreading further.
