Police warn of ‘porch pirates’ during busy holiday season

CHELAN, Wash. – The Chelan County Sheriff’s Department is reminding residents about ‘porch pirates’ as the holiday season approaches.

CCSD said that during the busy holiday season porch pirates become more active due to gifts and other items being delivered.

The police department gave residents these helpful tips as they begin to shop for the holidays:

1. Stay Alert: Keep an eye on your delivery notifications to get packages inside quickly.

2. Plan Ahead: Schedule deliveries when you’ll be home or use package lockers offered by some delivery services.

3. Require a Signature: If permitted, opt for delivery options that require a signature upon receipt or have packages sent to your workplace.

4. Hide Deliveries: Create a delivery area that is hidden from view, like a side entrance or behind a planter. Let shippers know this information.

5. Install Cameras: Consider adding security cameras to monitor your front porch.

6. Neighbor Power: Team up with neighbors to watch for each other’s packages and share information.

They also reminded that if you are a victim of a ‘porch pirate’ you should contact RiverCom Dispatch at 509-663-9911 and contact the vendor.
