Post Falls store incident reveals multi-state counterfeit currency plot

COEUR D’ ALENE, Idaho – A California man has been sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for dealing counterfeit currency that began in Post Falls.

Clinton Curry, 40, scheme spanned several states, including Idaho, Oregon, and Texas.

It began with an incident in Post Falls where local law enforcement began the investigation.

On Sept. 9, 2023, Curry entered a store in Post Falls and purchased $324 worth of goods and after he left, employees discovered that most of the money was counterfeit.

Law enforcement was notified, and an investigation began. Officers, in collaboration with the Spokane Office of the U.S. Secret Service soon discovered that Curry had conducted similar transactions in multiple western and southern states.

Authorities identified 46 incidents where Curry either passed or possessed counterfeit bills, totaling to over $40,000.

He was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison and will also serve an additional three years of supervised release. He must then pay restitution to the businesses he defrauded.
