Propane tank explosion threatens trailers in St. Maries, firefighters respond quickly

ST. MARIES, Idaho — Firefighters responded to a trailer fire Tuesday morning in which a propane tank exploded near several trailers.

According to the St. Maries Fire Protection District, crews were dispatched to a structure fire near Highway 3 and Rimrock Road around 5:40 a.m., approximately 1.5 miles south of St. Maries. Two separate callers reported that the front half of a camper trailer was on fire. A deputy told firefighters that upon arrival, they heard explosions from ammunition.

Firefighters said that when they arrived around 6 a.m., they immediately heard a propane tank explode. The fire was threatening a second trailer located about 10 feet away. A second engine and two tenders arrived shortly afterward, and the fire was quickly brought under control. Crews reported that the second trailer sustained no fire damage, and no one was inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
