Proposed Washington transportation budget includes research funding, addresses homelessness

SPOKANE, Wash.- The Washington State Senate Transportation Committee announced the proposed 2024 supplemental transportation budget on Feb. 20. There are four appropriations which directly mention funding for Spokane.

$1 million is marked for the city to collaborate with the Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT) and Washington State Patrol (WSP) to address homeless encampments. Over half of that fund would be utilized to engage in clean-up efforts along state highways and within the city core.

The University of Washington (UW) would be granted $60,000 to research ways of implementing more effective public transit solutions in populous counties across the state, including Spokane.

Improvements to state route 904 receive $200,000 under the current proposal, to be split between Spokane county and Cheney. An additional $4.8 million would reimburse Highline Grain, LLC for freight rail construction in Spokane.

In addition to funding specifically marked for the city and county, general state funding will also land in Spokane, though it is more difficult to determine exact dollar amounts based upon a proposed transportation budget.
