Pullman mayor addresses police chief investigation

PULLMAN, Wash. – The City of Pullman has issued a statement in the investigation into Pullman’s Police Chief, Jake Opgenorth. He is under investigation for allegations of domestic violence and assault.

The City of Pullman says that Chief Opgenorth was placed on administrative leave the same day a protection order petition was signed as a standard protocol measure.

The Washington State Patrol is still investigating the allegations.

The allegations stem from the petition where a woman claimed she was in a relationship with Opgenorth. She said he was aggressive toward her and continued to harass her after their breakup.

The city administration placed Opgenorth on leave at the direction of the Mayor of Pullman, Francis Benjamin.

“The city is aware of the ongoing Washington State Patrol investigation, as well as the civil protection order petition filed against Chief Opgenorth,” Benjamin said.

“We are fully committed to cooperating with the investigation, and while we are dedicated to maintaining transparency, we must also respect the integrity of the investigative and judicial processes and cannot comment further at this point. Updates will be provided as appropriate,” he added.

Commander Aaron Breshears has been designated as Acting Chief of Police during the investigation.
