Retired NFL player returns to coach football in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. – Take a look at the new helmets for middle school football in SPS. On one side it says Yasuhara and on the other side it says Glover. Two schools joining together, not just to get better at football, but according to one of the new middle school coaches, to get better as people.

This is Dario Romero, he is about to be the new head coach of one of the middle school football teams.

Romero was raised in Spokane, and he might be the perfect person for the job because he also started playing football in middle school, except his was different.

Romero’s family had to pay for middle school football because it was not a part of the school and it is a good thing that they did because Romero went on to play again at Lewis and Clark high school, before graduating and playing again at EWU, getting a degree and playing again for 10 years as a pro, including 3 years for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL.

While his accomplishments may be impressive, Romero says before football he was on the verge of dropping out of school, and if he had not played in middle school, he might not have even made it to high school or gained any of the experience that he is now hoping to share with hundreds of youth in this community.

“I’m taking my whole football experience from coaches I’ve had,” said Romero. “What they’ve given me, and as a staff member we’re going to give that to these kids…”

And that’s the message shared by both middle school head coaches with SPS ahead of their inaugural season.
