Riverfront Park hosts 13th annual Great Pumpkin Race

SPOKANE, Wash. – Riverfront Park will come alive this weekend with the excitement of the 13th annual Great Pumpkin Race. Hosted by Meals on Wheels Spokane, this event offers fun for the whole community from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Clock Tower Meadow.

Attendees can look forward to a variety of activities, including a costume contest, thrilling pumpkin races, prizes, a vendor fair, and trick-or-treating. The aim is to bring the community together through a feel-good activity.

One local resident who felt the joy of this event is first-grader Emmett Cote. A few years ago, Emmett creatively strapped a pumpkin to his cousin’s longboard and won the race.

“Isn’t getting to race a pumpkin pretty fun… Yeah… Who does not like racing a pumpkin?” Emmett said.

Emmett’s family said his victory held special significance. Emmett has autism, Smith-Magenis syndrome, and ADHD, which causes him to experience anxiety during competitions.

“Sometimes we don’t win and we don’t get first place… and we do our best and Emmett won and he was excited and everyone was excited for him,” Clariese Cote stated. “I loved the community… everyone was cheering for him… it was very, very special.”

The win meant so much to Emmett that he took his trophy everywhere for several weeks.

This annual event continues to unite the Spokane community, drawing people of all ages to celebrate creativity and sportsmanship.
