SPOKANE, Wash. – As winter approaches, the Numerica Skate Ribbon in Riverfront Park is gearing up for another season of ice skating fun. The rink is set to open next Saturday, November 16, 2024.
Crews have been working diligently to prepare the rink. They began setting up on November 6, working overnight shifts to ensure everything is ready for skaters.
A former hockey player who has been helping lead the ribbon setup for the last six years shared his excitement about the process. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” he said. He explained the meticulous steps involved, including working with concrete and applying hot water to create a smooth surface.
The process involves painting the ice white to reflect the sun and protect it from melting. The rink workers then flood the ribbon to finish it off. The Zamboni covers the ice with hot water, but due to the ribbon’s location on a hill, the workers must spray slowly and carefully to ensure safety.
The ice is built thicker, resulting in a softer and slower surface, which is more beginner-friendly for skaters.
The Numerica Skate Ribbon promises a fun and safe winter activity for the Spokane community.
