The director of the U.S. Census Bureau has resigned. Robert Santos was known for emphasizing inclusivity and outreach to overlooked communities. His departure comes midway through his five-year term and in the middle of planning by the statistical agency for the 2030 census, which will determine political power and federal funding for another decade to come. Santos was appointed by former Democratic President Joe Biden. He was sworn in as the bureau’s 26th director, and the first Hispanic leader, in 2022. His departure provides another appointment opportunity to Republican President Donald Trump. Civil rights groups urged Trump on Friday to choose someone who’ll be impartial.
