SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Mayor London Breed is fighting a self-funded philanthropist for reelection while in nearby Oakland, Mayor Sheng Thao is battling a recall election. It was too early Wednesday to call either the reelection bid or recall effort, which were both fueled by concerns over public safety and homelessness. Updated results are not expected until Thursday. Breed was trailing anti-poverty nonprofit founder Daniel Lurie. Lurie pledged to bring accountability and public service back to City Hall. Recall proponents say Thao’s lack of leadership worsened crime in Oakland and drove out businesses. She said she was working hard to stabilize the city.
